Where is a cheap rural place to live in either Virginia, North Carolina, or the tip of TN?

Posted by admin on Jan 29, 2010

I need to move and decided to move south cause half my kids have moved south and I have to drive my daughter to college in NC in August anyhow. I’m looking for some cheap rural places to live. Maybe buy a plot of land or something. I’m on worker’s comp, disabled, need surgery, and can’t afford rent. I need trees and space, but it would be nice if it’s only like a 1/2 hour from a city.

Deffinately the mountain region of NC
The Southeast Tennessee border counties
like Haywood County which is just east of Asheville
You could try Waynesville, NC

Is it ok for a small dog (11 lbs) to eat a handful of cherries, pit and all?

Posted by admin on Jan 27, 2010

I’m worried that the pits will get caught in her and she will need surgery to get them out. We have a cherry tree and she like to eat them. She use to spit out the seed, now she is eating the whole thing.

Thanks!

Not good at all. Pits contain cyanide. Cyanide can kill.

How much of a tree is it safe to prune?

Posted by admin on Jan 25, 2010

It is still very early spring here, and the sap is not yet running in my oak tree. A few years ago, we accidentally felled another tree on top of this oak, so it basically has three or four main trunks, and a couple of large branches sticking off some of the trunk. Think "giant bonsai".

I have done some significant pruning on this tree already, and at this point, I am ready to do another major cut, which would reduce the mass of the tree (visually) by about 1/3. It would put the balance off temporarily, but I am relying on the tree to fill itself in by following the light in a couple of years.

my question is this – how much surgery is too much? Can I kill the tree by simply taking off too much and should I wait one more year to reduce the trunks to two main ones? This last cut would probably be about 6 inches in diameter. If I do it this week, I will have made three or four cuts of greater than 3 inches.

The rule of thumb is never take any more than 1/3 off in any one year. Even though the sap has not started running yet, cutting any more than that will seriously stress the tree.

what happens in laser surgery towards the eyes??

Posted by admin on Jan 24, 2010

to help short sightedness
and does it help to start at trees 1km away for 8hrs a day to help shortsightedness?

When eyesight goes bad, what happens is the cornea gets a lot of grooves in it. The eye tries to heal itself, and ends up blurring your vision with a goo that fills in the grooves.

Lasic surgury is similar to shaving off the cornea (much more accurate than using a razor of any sort, though. It will take off the goo and flatten out the grooves. this makes your vision good again. This is why not everyone can get lasic surgery, since not all cases of poor vision are caused by what I mentioned.

It doesn’t help to stare at anything, in fact that "hurts". The best way to improve your eyesight is by getting blood flow to them. If you close your eyes and dart them around as fast as you can they will get more blood flow (and some of that goo from healing itself comes off too). Do that until your eyes are a little sore (note LITTLE sore) each day and after a year or so your vision will improve.
