How do I get my Mobile home park to cut down all of my pine trees?

Posted by admin on Feb 15, 2010

I live in a Mobile home park. It is a Co op so all of its members own the park. It has a lot of pine trees around my lot esp i have 7 trees on my lot and they wreak havoc. They dump pine pitch all over my car they leave me with no lawn because of the pine needles and just last this week a branch feel and destroyed both of my cars which I have to pay for my cars to get fixed and they are not even my trees and my property. They are extremely expensive to cut down because of the hazards and I cant afford to have them cut down. So I need to know how I can get them to pay for it. I even told them If they get them lopped down I would finish cutting them up and get rid of them. That would be a lot more cheaper for them as well. I just worry every nite now one is going to fall on my house and I dont know what to do .

throw a tarp over the car when you park it.

Who ever owns the trees is responsible for removing branches etc that could be a hazard. If the park owns the trees, show them the bill. They are responsibly for paying, whether they will or not is another story but you could do what you can and even take them to small claims court if you have the energy.

A certified arborist should inspect the trees to determine if there aer any additional hazard branches in danger of falling. White pines do tend to have brittle branches and if they are white pines planted near a parking area, that was a poor choice of species.

Pine needle mulch is one of the most desired and expensive mulches to purchase. You don’t need a lawn anyway — let the needles lay you have maintenance free surface to enjoy that doesn’t use any fossil fuels to maintain.

Don’t just cut them all down. We share the planet with plants and animals and these valuable trees and serving an important role in the environment. There are ways to learn to live with them.

If you have to cut them, replace them with something else that won’t have the brittle branches.

Why are certain pet owners snobby towards people who have exotic animals?

Posted by admin on Feb 10, 2010

I get sick of people calling me sick and cruel because my pets are a little unusual. People assume because you have sugar gliders and hedgehogs or even more exotic animals like fennecs (no I dont have fennecs), rather than rabbits and guinea pigs that you are cruel, and that you have an imprisoned wild animal that hates living in your home. These people have never met me or my animals, they usually have no idea about the animals in question or the species in question, or even how long their own pets have been domesticated, its really aggravating.

It could be argued the only truly domestic pet is the dog, POSSIBLY the cat. I have news for some people. A pet rabbit or small rodent like a hamster is NOT domesticated like a dog. Some of these species animals have been domesticated for just a hundred years, maybe a LITTLE more, and many come from bloodlines more recently caught in the wild. That does NOT make your pet domesticated, in fact pet SKUNKS have been domesticated as long as some small rodents (skunk fur farming began in the early 1800’s and people have been keeping skunks as pets since that time). There are reports of people keeping sugar gliders back in the early 1900’s, and parrots have been being kept as pets since ancient civilisations. There is a reason animals like rabbits and hamsters need a lot of handling to become friendly, and why a lot of rabbits hate being picked up…because it is their wild INSTINCT, just like my sugar gliders wild instinct is to glide to safety (and by the way, they consider ME the safest tree in the forest). Even cats, if a pet cat becomes stray and her kittens arent used to human contact within a certain point, it is likely those kittens are never going to make good pets.

Sorry for the rant people. But I just want to alert people to the fact that although you think your bunny is domestic just because it has lop ears and a short face and fancy colour, unlike the wild bunnies out there, doesnt mean its any tamer than my pet sugar gliders. Rabbits have been domesticated in the western nations since the 1800s, the same amount of time as skunks. Its not exactly a huge amount of time, now is it?

And lastly, what is considered exotic now will be normal in ten years time, and people will be picking on other people for owning something ELSE. Think about it, 30 years ago a snake keeper would have gotten very funny looks and a lot of comments about craziness and cruelty, now snake keeping is common, snakes are barely considered exotic any more. The same has happened with pet chinchillas and degus, and I’m betting in 20 years sugar gliders and hedgehogs will be completely normal pets to have.

I think we should all learn to have a little more tolerance for peoples choices, in everything not just pet keeping. As long as the owner can provide the space, the time, the money and the pet CAN be socialised into becoming a happy pet (and I am of the opinion that there are animals that cannot be tamed, such as most of the apes and monkeys, and very large cats, and for some odd reason, a lot of squirrels), wheres the problem?

Rant over. What are your thoughts on exotic pets?
LOL, oops I didnt realise how long that post was/
Eileen, interesting point. I am not against the keeping of monkeys, but I have yet to see a case where adult monkeys are fully tamed…generally you get a lot of aggression with monkeys its just the way they behave. You certainly have your right to have them, and its great that you have more than one, I just hate these people that treat them as children and dress them in human clothes. Apes…well, I’ve yet to hear of any private individual who could provide for a chimp who wasnt a millionaire with tonnes of primate experience.

I agree with you, but I think ALL exotic pets should be treated the same as so called domestic ones. Unless all pet owners support each other, the animal rights groups will make it so no one may own any pet. They start with banning the large cats and the pit bull type dog breeds, then gradually ban other types of pets. Now they are trying to pass HR699, the Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act, that would ban just about any pet other than a domestic dog, cat or goldfish. When they are done banning the big cats, wolves, bears and primates, they will come after the rest of the pet owners. Don’t believe me? Just look at the mandatory spay/neuter laws they are passing everywhere. These are animal rights backed bills to help eliminate pet dogs.

Why should someone with a skunk or hedgehog have any more right to keep the pet they choose then those that keep a serval or a monkey? African serval cats have been kept in captivity by the ancient Egyptians, long before most exotic pets generally accepted today as being domesticated were. They were brought to this country before 1904.

If someone has the resources and knowledge to properly care for an animal, they should be allowed to own any animal they wish. I know people that spend a ton of money developing nice enclosures with running water and even waterfalls and high tech security systems to protect their pets from intruders. Owners of large exotics have established husbandry courses to teach fellow owners how to properly care for their animals. They also help each other out by helping to build secure cages.

Animal rights groups use the excuse that these large exotics are a threat to public safety and health. If you look at the statistics, about 20% of all attacks by big cats were at AZA zoos, with about another 38% at USDA facilities. When you look at escapes by primates, 49% were at AZA zoos. Large exotic owners have a much better track record of keeping these animals than so called experts.

How can they compare Mike Vick with a hunter? Makes no sense to me.

Your critters look great, as well do ours. Sorry, been meaning to do the photobucket thing, but haven’t yet. So I’ll fill your ear a minute here…

We have 4 horses, and one is a coming 30 year old gelding with special needs in his old age. I’ve owned him for 28 years. When his time is up, I want his hide on our wall. It might be morbid to do this to some people, but someday I want to be buried with his hide wrapped around me. He is a once in a lifetime horse. Two are starves I bought cheap last winter. The bones are fading. The other is "Sam Colt", the guy on my avatar.
We had to put my mare down last winter, she had cancer and thankfully my boyfriend could pull the trigger. She was my main saddle horse and I knew I couldn’t do it. She went in a good way. One shot and she wasn’t suffering any more. That was a man doing what needed to be done for the animal, not abuse.
Dogs? Our blueticks have a deluxe kennel and a stern "growl" from us puts them in their place. No other abuse needed. They are so eager to please. They are hunting fools!
Trapping, well, that’s a different story. We lost 2 of our farm cats in our traps this winter. They also didn’t suffer and were never abused. The cats around here come running when they hear a gun (visitors are confused) cuz a pidgeon or squirrel might be involved.
They didn’t choose us, we chose them. They eat before we do!

How do you manually deflate the air suspension on a 1996 Lincoln Town Car?

Posted by admin on Feb 5, 2010

1996 Lincoln Town Car, Executive: 4.6L, V8.

(Rear) passenger-side air suspension bag is FUBAR but, driver’s-side seems to be fully inflated. I turned the Air Susp. switch in the trunk, "off"– hoping that it might slowly deflate on its own after a while, like the ones in my ‘99 Grand Marquis do but, about three weeks have passed w/ the switch "off", & it’s still as inflated as ever!
I haven’t the money to make the "air-to-spring conversion", nor the desire to, quite frankly– as she’s a ‘96 and has many other problems that take president.

SO, obviously, she’s lop-sided at the moment, which creates somewhat of a safety/drivability issue, aside the fact that she looks REALLY "trashy" ridin’ down the Boulevard all jacked-up on the left-front side!It would be nice just to deflate the other one, too–for the sake of symetry, so she’d at least appear level across the rear– and not simply broken!

Is there safe/relatively easy way for a shade-tree mechanic to deflate the bag, or am I just SOL for the moment?

Thanks, in advance!

THE BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU IS DISCONNECT THE AIR SUSPENSION MOTOR. IF THE BAGS STILL HOLDING AIR, THERE IS A RELEASE ON TOP OF IT. ITS KINDA A B**** TO GET TO THOUGH.

Time to get rid of my free-roaming bunny’s cage?

Posted by admin on Feb 3, 2010

He’s my 9 month old mini-lop bun :) Sooo sweet, smart and adorable. He uses his litterbox 100% of the time now, never an accident (knock on wood). He is best buds with both of my cats, he acts just like the cats lol. He has learned that chewing on certain things like the carpeting or couch are bad, and he automatically goes to chew on his toys only now (again, knock on wood!)…

He has a 2-compartment dish with pellets on one side and hay on the other. I leave a bunny salad (veggies and tiny bit of fruit) in a dish for him every morning and hide little treats around here for him to find thoughout the day while I am working.

So I have noticed that he rarely goes in his cage. He goes in there once in a while but I am thinking he wouldn’t care if there was no cage. But a bunny with no cage just sounds so wrong lol…But he’s to a point where he sleeps at the foot of my bed with both cats, he also climbs into the cat tree with my cats sometimes and sleeps there.

But do you think he would feel homeless if I take away his cage? I hate having this big cage in my living room but I don’t wanna take away his home either.

I woudn’t get rid of his cage entirely. Bunnies need a place of their own to feel safe in and spend some time alone. Maybe you could get him a smaller cage? Just as long as he still has his own room, so to speak. Plus, if you go away for the weekend or something and needs pet-sitting, you’ll need a place to shut him in so he’ll be safe. A good-sized cat carrier may work well for your needs.
