Large Oak Tree stump – any useful or decorative ideas?

Posted by admin on Jan 19, 2010

This was a 90′ Oak tree that was dying and I had cut down, any thoughts on decorating the stump rathering than spending more $$ to grind it?

Use it as a stage for your plants and yard art. Plan your garden around it, and use it to build height. Find some bromeliads to plant on it.

Can I build a fire pit on top of an old tree stump? The stump is cut about 2-3 inches above ground. How to?

Posted by admin on Jan 18, 2010

You know, people put those firepits on their decks all the time. Maybe for safety, you should put some pavers between the bowl and the wood. OK, if it burns the stump–you don’t have to worry about it anymore.

Took down a tree… Ground down stump… Lots of mulch everywhere… Can our Mom put sod down on top?

Posted by admin on Jan 17, 2010

This was a HUGE southern oak tree. There was practically no grass in the yard due to all the shade it created. Now that it’s gone and the stump ground down, Mom wants to put down sod. Can it be done on top of the mulch? If not, how much mulch needs to be removed (difficult to coordinate long-distance… we don’t live near her)? Is there some way to speed up the absorption of the mulch where it lays or otherwise fertilize the sod to counter the acid from the mulch?

Thanks for any and all advice.
Thanks for your comments so far. How about further out from the tree where there is a thinner layer of spray-off (?) mulch, but more soil? The entire yard is pretty shallow when it comes to soil. This tree had a root system you wouldn’t believe!!!

Hi. First of all sod is not always the best/permant solution to your problem. The oak loves acid soil; grass loves a basic to neurtal soil. The sod will not take to the mulch and you will probably be replacing it very soon, The best way is to grow a permant lawn, but it will take a bit of work and time.
First the soil needs to be adjusted. I would suggest that you add at least 2 inches of a good top soil above the mulch. Then add lime to lower the acidity. Powdered line will take about 6 months to work fully, so you may want to use pelitized lime in a granular form that works within a couple of weeks. You should then seed the area with the best type of seed for your area. You can check with your local garden center-not the box stores- as to what type of grass grows best in your area. Usually you would put down the seed with a starter fertilizer and rake it all in to just under the soil. Then water daily when there is no rain. Just remember to give the area only about an inch of water daily–more times a day if the days are warm and sunny.

Even if you decide to go with sod, you will have to put down a good foundation of top soil for the roots to get hold and lower the acidity as well. Your mom may want to call a local landscaper to give her more advise and maybe some cost related expenses. You may want to send her this so she will know what is involved.

Either way, it will be a few years before a good lawn is established. Good luck and Happy Gardening.
