How do I kill a sumach tree stump?

Posted by admin on Feb 15, 2010

I chopped it down two years ago and it came back with a vengeance. It’s right against the foundation so I want it out! It’s impossible to get a stump chopper in this space and forget manoeuvering a shovel. I’ve found the main roots and have cut them off in the ground. We have a bylaw agains using products such as Roundup. Any suggestions?
Thanks….

there is a product called Hi-YIELD STUMP REMOVER. you will need to drill a 1" hole 10" deep on top and on the side a 1" hole 3" from the top of the stump at a slant to connect if possible with the bottom of the top hole. then pour 1/4 lb. into each hole then fill with water and let stand for 4 to 6 weeks. I used this product on a 12" stump of a popcorn tree and within 8 weeks i could kick it over with my foot.

Can you plant grass over a tree stump?

Posted by admin on Feb 10, 2010

We had a tree cut down and the stump ground, howerver, he didn’t quite grind it "level". There is a small mound; I’ve covered it with dirt. Should I just plant grass over it? How much dirt should I put over it and will it be hard to mow?

Hopefullly you cut the tree down far enough you won’t trip over it. I would cut it down somemore, make it about an inch below ground level. I heard if you paint the tree stump, it will not continue to grow. Yes, I would then plant grass over it. However, you might still get some tree sprouts growing up around your yard.

how hard is it to grind down tree stumps?

Posted by admin on Feb 8, 2010

We have many small to medium sized trees which we plan to cut down and grind the stumps in order to grow grass. (half the trees are dead) Is a stump grinder difficult to handle?

Driving a Semi Truck is not hard for a trained driver. Operating a stump grinder is a bit like handling a large rototiller. Louder (ear [protection), more dusty, Compared to cutting the trees down and bucking the brush, loading or mulching it up, the stumps will go quickly. Why not get a back hoe service and dig em up? No pesky regrowth, no settling.

Do I have a good estimate for tree removals?

Posted by admin on Feb 5, 2010

5 50-foot hemlocks + stump grinding = $2,500
in Massachusetts.
Is this a good price?

Neighbor just had 2 60 or better ft. oaks taken out last week.
$1600 in Tn, including the stump grinding (which sucks because it is hell getting it out of your yard over the next summer). So I think your in a good price range.
