Arborist..or tree people….I had a fire in my yard last year and some trees were scorched at ground level…?
Posted by admin on Jan 29, 2010
Two or three died, but most lived but most have bark peeling off at ground level to half way up trunks…trees are mostly water oaks, mostly mature, some 30 to 40 feet tall. The bark peel worries me because it was symtomatic of the ones that eventually died…but the ones that made it are hanging on..they look o.k. and leaves are healthy…the ones that died, died quick..Should I do anything to the trees that are peeling bark?
peeling bark is not a good sign. if the damage goes all the way or most of the way around a tree, you can assume it’s not going to make it. bark is crucial to a tree. they can take some bark damage, but…..well, you’ll find out soon enough. and no, there’s nothing you can do but let nature take its course.
Anyone have questions about there trees?

I am a certified arborist and I love the challenge of new questions about diseases and just overall what to do’s with trees and landscaping.
So what disease causes the bark on a liquid amber to start peeling and the leaves turn all brown and fall off before they are fully developed?

Snap cut variation of square rigging.
Posted by admin on Jan 25, 2010
Seattle arborists Zeb Haney and Mike Harrell remove a western red cedar tree using the square rigging technique and snap cutting. Each piece is under full control. Mike is following all ANSI Z133 rules for tree work. Notice two handed chain saw operation, he is secured with a lanyard, and a climbing line choked around the tree, and setup for self rescue if needed, using a Grigri descender. The cut piece is decelerated as it lowers, without causing damage to the ground, or shaking Mike out of the tree,

People in the field of horticulture?
Posted by admin on Jan 25, 2010
I have an assignment for my horticulture class where I need to interview someone in the field of horticulture.
It would be awesome if someone would be able to answer a few different interview questions about their career through email.
It would be great if someone who is a greenhouse grower, florist, retail sales, grounds maintenance, turf maintenance, turf production, nursery production, arborist, extension agent, research technician, horticultural therapist, golf course manager, landscape design, or horticultural education.
Thanks a ton!!!
I am a professional horticulturist. I started in retail horticulture, I have worked in the wholesale area and landscape design. I am a Michigan Certified Nurseryman as well.
Tree cutting markings?
Posted by admin on Jan 24, 2010
Yesterday an arborist came by at our condominium complex. He marked many trees in the area. o that Red marks mean that the trees will be removed. What do green marks mean?
will not be cut this time? but why then mark it? I mean in total about 50% of all the trees are marked. but….why dont they just mark the ones that they WILL cut?
When I helped do selective cutting in National Forests the Parks people would mark those to be cut in red, but I never saw green. In some instances if a company would buy cutting rights on a 40 acre plot they would sometimes mark "wolf trees" not to be cut. My thinking on the green is it means the tree needs remedial pruning ? I am a professional arborist with a lifetime of experience. I grew up in the field and stay up to date by reading magazine articles. I have been to Arlington National Cemetery and trimmed trees with the National Arborist Association in 1993. If you would like to ask me a question please send me some pictures in a video or slide show, and I will do the best I can at answering it. I may just be able to offer some insight on what to expect when the tree service or estimator show up to try to convince you of what you need to have done.

arborist equiptment question- we have a 40 ft or so oak my husband wants to take out himself should i let him?
Posted by admin on Jan 20, 2010
he used to work for the parks service and knows how – did it for years says he needs 500 or so in equipt the rest his cousin has is this too much would it be cheaper to have an insured professional do it it is in front yard no power lines far enough from house, icestorms here in iowa broke all the lower branches for several layers up and it s now diseased from the open wounds
I live in Florida, just had a large tree about 40 or so ft tall removed. It was near the house cost $250 and they ground out the roots and stump. Chipped up the Logs and limbs and took it all away. Filled in the hole. It took 3 guys about 2 hours.
To keep the cost down you husband may be able to rent the equipment.
