Where is a cheap rural place to live in either Virginia, North Carolina, or the tip of TN?

Posted by admin on Jan 29, 2010

I need to move and decided to move south cause half my kids have moved south and I have to drive my daughter to college in NC in August anyhow. I’m looking for some cheap rural places to live. Maybe buy a plot of land or something. I’m on worker’s comp, disabled, need surgery, and can’t afford rent. I need trees and space, but it would be nice if it’s only like a 1/2 hour from a city.

Deffinately the mountain region of NC
The Southeast Tennessee border counties
like Haywood County which is just east of Asheville
You could try Waynesville, NC

Grinding Tree Stumps – Keep the Wood Chips or will they bring out the termites?

Posted by admin on Jan 29, 2010

Hey all – I’ve done a lot of searching on the site and read about the pros and cons of fresh wood chips – here’s my situation: I’m actually having about 23 (count’em) stumps ground down this week. Originally, the guy was offering to spread the wood chips around the yard – but then I got a warning about termites from a friend of mine.

Now, the area we’re talking about is surrounding a pool and is far from our main house – however, the pool is close to a small cottage we have on the property.

So the options are:

1. Spread the wood chips and save us money on both haul away and mulching in this rather large area.

2. Have him haul the chips away.

I really have no idea how big a pile of chips we’re talking about for 23 tree stumps – so I may have to have him haul away some of it anyway.

Number one rules in the "Reducing Termite Activity" manual is the reduce the amount of dead wood and cellulose materials around a property.

This is a no-brainer. If your property is in a high risk termite area then I would get rid of the chip. Its not worth leaving on your property just so it can "look nice". It could cost you thousands of dollars damage.

Arborist..or tree people….I had a fire in my yard last year and some trees were scorched at ground level…?

Posted by admin on Jan 29, 2010

Two or three died, but most lived but most have bark peeling off at ground level to half way up trunks…trees are mostly water oaks, mostly mature, some 30 to 40 feet tall. The bark peel worries me because it was symtomatic of the ones that eventually died…but the ones that made it are hanging on..they look o.k. and leaves are healthy…the ones that died, died quick..Should I do anything to the trees that are peeling bark?

peeling bark is not a good sign. if the damage goes all the way or most of the way around a tree, you can assume it’s not going to make it. bark is crucial to a tree. they can take some bark damage, but…..well, you’ll find out soon enough. and no, there’s nothing you can do but let nature take its course.

Your opinion on tree removal charge, please.?

Posted by admin on Jan 29, 2010

I have a live pine tree, actually I think a Brewer spruce, about 50-60 feet tall I’d like removed. Cut down and taken away. Any idea of what a reasonable cost would be to have this done?
If it makes any difference, I am in New York.

I would like to help you with this question, but each area of the country have different prices. I do know that leaving a stump is cheaper that complete removal which is digging down into the earth to remove roots and all.

I would suggest looking into the telephone book and getting three estimates. Let them know exactly what you want done and have it put into a contract.

Did my hairdresser do me a favor? What do you think? (This is a spiritual question. Read more.)?

Posted by admin on Jan 29, 2010

Yesterday, I went for a haircut and asked to have it very short. But the hairdresser misunderstood and lopped off almost all my hair. At first I was angry, but then something dawned on me. In metaphysics, there is a belief that a residue of your emotions is stored in your hair, kind of like the rings of a tree tell its history. They say that cutting your hair is a way of separating yourself from that emotional energy.

I’ve gone through a lot of stress over the past two years and I’ve had every negative emotion possible. I’m working on improving my attitude, but I wonder if this botched haircut is a blessing not a curse.

Could this be why women who divorce or breakup with boyfriends cut their hair? And which comes first? Do we get shorter hairstyles to break off from past emotions and "energy"? Or the opposite?

Have you or anyone you know had a haircut to make an emotional or spiritual break from the past? Did it work?

Yes she did you a favor. I don’t believe that emotions are somehow entangled in your hair, however, she did open your mind to new possibilities. Many people are so concerned about how others perceive them that they are afraid to take risks and chances.

While you didn’t consciously take a chance, the end result is the same. You as a person aren’t defined by your hair.

I guess the reason many people cut their hair or get a new hairstyle after a breakup is to try something new or get a fresh start. If the person they broke up with liked their hair a certain way then they would probably change it after they break up too.

Enjoy the new you!

Is it ok for a small dog (11 lbs) to eat a handful of cherries, pit and all?

Posted by admin on Jan 27, 2010

I’m worried that the pits will get caught in her and she will need surgery to get them out. We have a cherry tree and she like to eat them. She use to spit out the seed, now she is eating the whole thing.

Thanks!

Not good at all. Pits contain cyanide. Cyanide can kill.

Anyone have questions about there trees?

Posted by admin on Jan 27, 2010

I am a certified arborist and I love the challenge of new questions about diseases and just overall what to do’s with trees and landscaping.

So what disease causes the bark on a liquid amber to start peeling and the leaves turn all brown and fall off before they are fully developed?

A tree invading my property although planted by neighbor who is responsible for the removal of the tree?

Posted by admin on Jan 27, 2010

My neighbor has a tree that has invaded our property. It has many large roots on our side and has caused extensive damage to an existing fence and a wall that is holding up their property. Would a survayor be able to determine who’s tree it belongs to. Does the tree become property of both neighbors? who’s responsible for removing the tree when it has grown out of control?

It depends on your state and county in most counties.

First I would approach the home owner and let them know the tree on their property is damaging your property, as in "most" cases if a tree falls on your property belonging to another "their" homeowners insurance must pay for the damage.
Or you can ask to split the cost of getting the tree trimmed back to save you both alot of expense in damages later on.
Or just a trim trimmer come in and trim what is hanging on your side. As per the root damage dig around it best you can, you can take a chain saw cut the said root and place a piece of tin straight down in the ground and it will reroute the root in another direction. The tree trimmer in most cases can do this also.

You may also want to contact your homeowners insurance and as their opinion on the situation since it most likely will be a future claim.

Figure out this Math Riddle?

The First Person to get the riddles get best answer but hurry this will only be open for 5 hours. Or whoever answers the most will get best answer.

Here are the riddles.

Mr.Hedges the gardener was building a vegetable garden. He selected a site which covered an area of 288 m(squared). He found that if he increased the length by 6m and decreased the width by 4m, the area was unchanged. What was the length and width of the original piece of land?

Two trees, and oak and an ash, grew together side by side in the forest. Over the years the ash grew to be 1 1/4 times as high as the oak. One day the woodcutter came along and lopped 3m off the top of both trees. Now the ash is 1 1/3 times as high as the oak. How highwas the ash originally?

Mr. and Mrs. Quigley just moved into a new home with a lot of land. They need to plant grass seed. The problem is that they are not sure how to figure the new amount that they need. At their old house, they knew that the lawn was 10 ft. by 20 ft. and needed 5 pounds of seed. Their new lawn is 100 ft. by 50 ft. How will knowing the amount of seed needed from their old house help them with buying seed for the new lawn?

1. 16*18 (16-4)(18+6)=(12)(24)=288
2. 15m. The ash was 15m the oak was 12m. after the cut the ash was 12 and the oak was 9. 9*(4/3)=12
3. If they know how much seed it took to cover their old yard and the area of their old yard they can make a proportion with the area of their new yard. 5/200=x/5000. Multiply by 5000 to get 125 pounds of seed.
